K-Rith HIV, Durban South Africa

The well known K-Rith HIV research department of the KwaZulu Natal Research Institute, Durban South Africa, use a StirLIN-2 liquid nitrogen system for storing their samples and do research.

The KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH) is a world class, independent basic science research facility. Its mission is to conduct outstanding basic science research on tuberculosis (TB) and HIV and translate the scientific findings into new tools to control TB and HIV.

A StirLIN-2 liquid nitrogen system was installed together with a permanent vacuum line allowing a LAB 40K tank, situated in the K-RITH cryo-repository, to automatically fill with LN2.

On the spot, and fully automated liquid nitrogen is produced from ambient air. From the storage vessel this is transferred to the repository storage tanks to keep the samples at cryogenic temperatures.
